Great Britain has lost one of its icons. The death of the British actress Diana Rigg made a sensation!
The British
screen actress Dame Enid Diana Elizabeth Rigg, The Bond girl, Lady Olenna
Tyrell in Game of Thrones and Avengers' partner in crime Emma Peel has died on Thursday 11 September at her
house in London.
The great actress Diana Rigg was the 60s
best known star on TV. She took the lion’s share in her sexy and sassy
role in the Avengers. She started her career in the Royal Shakespeare Company
in 1959, and won the first of three Tony Award nominations for the Best Actress
in a Play for her role in Ronald Millar play Abelard and Heloise in 1970. She
appeared in many plays including the musical Colette by Tom Jones and Harvey
Schmidt in 1982. In 1990, she succeeded in many roles like Medea which was
transferred to Broadway in 1994 and won the Tony Award as the Best Actress.
In 2008,
she reappeared in the Cherry Orchard, and in 2018 she remarked her return to
Broadway after 20 years or more of disappearance. she played the non-singing role
of Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady . In an
interview with Broadway.com she ironically commented on why Mrs Higgins does
not have a song as she said “Thank God! [Laughs.] I’d empty the theater if I had a song »
She was back on TV
in 2013 with a sarcastic role in Game of Thrones where she played the
political mastermind Lady Olenna Tyrell which earned her an Emmy nomination for
Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. However, in 2019 Rigg informed
that she has never watched Game of Thrones neither before, nor after her time
on the show
Rigg’s only daughter Rachael Stirling claims that her
mother has sufferd from cancer since March, and it was the cause of her death. She informed: "She died of cancer diagnosed in
March, and spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life,
full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession.”
Rachael states: "My Beloved Ma
died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, at home, surrounded by family.”
She emotionally continues: "I
will miss her beyond words."
